Our History |
The Five Points Conservation Club traces its roots back to 1948 in Franklin Township, Marion County, Indiana. In 1948, a few friends got together and asked for permission from a local farmer to host a turkey shoot on his land. The land was too swampy to farm. So, one fall day with a burn barrel to stay warm and some straw bales to hold targets, a turkey shoot was held on land owned by the Rohde family. Many other turkey shoots were held at that site in the late 40’s and early 50’s.
In 1954, the shooters got together and bought the unfarmable land from the Rohde’s and formed the Five Points Conservation Club. That is the same property that the club owns today. The clubhouse was originally constructed in 1960. It featured a meeting space, kitchen, and restrooms. Throughout the years, it hosted many events including membership meetings, local dances, parties, and was even once used as a polling location. In the 1960’s, the clubhouse was also used by a local CB radio club. This was the beginning of the CB radio boom that would occur into the 1970’s. The shooting part of the club and the CB club shared the facilities for several years. In the early 1970’s, the CB club expanded the clubhouse by adding the back room. This was originally separated by an interior wall from the original clubhouse. In the 1970’s the CB radio club folded and the remaining members joined the Conservation Club. During the 70’s and 80’s, many turkey shoots and trap shooting events were held at the club. In those days, the stillboards were shot from inside the clubhouse (the interior separation wall was still there) with the shotgun barrels poking out through the windows. There were frequent stillboard shoots at the club during this time. The Turkey Shoots eventually diminished in the 1980s and there was less trap shooting at the club. As the club started to shoot trap again, the local Franklin Township Fire Department moved the Turkey shoots from the Acton Campground to the club in the late 1980’s. Today, the club continues the long tradition of hosting turkey shoots in the spring and fall. The club also shoots trap every week from April through November. The club has a youth team,The Fireballs, that competes at local sanctioned trap shoots including the Indiana State Shoot each July. Over the years, the area around the club has grown considerably from the farms that once occupied the area. Today, there are modern housing developments and more in the surrounding area. By teaching safe and responsible firearm ownership, and maintaining safe practices, the Five Points Conservation Club is able to continue to use the facilities. We are continuing to build on the legacy of the club that started back in 1948. |
